Employment laws affect both employers and employees in many different ways. This film explains the key bits of legislation and examines how they work in the real world.

PART 1: A Guide to Employment Law
A mass of legislation now governs the way businesses treat people at every stage of employment. Key issues include sexual equality and discrimination. The law now says that companies must not discriminate against staff on the basis of a list of "protected characteristics", including sex, age, race, sexual orientation and disability. The film examines the role of the European Union, ACAS, employment tribunals, and how one boss views the laws.

PART 2: What Happens In A Tribunal
Employment tribunals are often used to decide disputes in the workplace. This unique, dramatised reconstruction of a tribunal tells the story of a woman who claims she has been unfairly dismissed. Maria gets involved in a football riot. Her employer sacks her. But have they followed the correct procedures? In the end the employment tribunal has to decide.

Extra: Discrimination: The Difficulties
A solicitor explains the complexities of dealing with discrimination at work, from the point of view of both the employer and the employee.
