Nairobi, capital of Kenya is also known as the capital of crime because of a dramatic increase in kidnappings. This is rooted in one of Africa's largest slums - Mathare.

MATHARE: More than 35% of Kenyans live below the poverty line. In Nairobi, it's more than 60%. In the centre of town are some of the biggest slums in all of Africa. Mathare is one of the oldest. An estimated one million people live in appalling conditions. Making matters worse this is the haunt of one of the most dangerous gangs in the world: the Mungiki.

MUNGIKI: A young woman living in the slum risks her life to describe how the Mungiki operate. "My parents were killed by the Mungikis," she says. "They left my sister and me alive and forced my brother to join them. One day he couldn't take it any more and ran away. Unfortunately, they found him, locked him up and tortured him." The Mungiki are not just a gang, but a semi-political cult whose tentacles control the slums of major cities throughout Kenya

SAFE FOR TOURISTS? Inside police headquarters in Nairobi are the offices of the Special Tourist Unit of the Kenyan police. But their small numbers mean that they can only protect people in the bigger hotels. Their relationship with the slum-dwellers remains tense. And there's been an alarming increase in kidnappings in the centre of the city. The Mungiki target the tourists for their money. Says one man: "As long as there are poor, unemployed people who are starving the Mungiki will easily find new disciples"
